Website Design research with WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace, Wix, and many more…

A website is one small part of your overall business ecosystem. This week, I am exploring the different Web Design Platforms we all face. Choosing the right one for you and your business is a commonly searched problem—and one that is a hugely diverse market.

The reality is that there is no “best” option; only what you prefer fits your business goals and works best for your type of business or budget.

When establishing an online presence, the importance of selecting the right web design platform cannot be overstated. Each platform has benefits and downsides, and your choice should align perfectly with your business needs and goals. In this post, we will break down the most commonly used web design platforms, discuss their pros and cons, and elaborate on the significance of professional web design services.

Types of Web Design platforms and their benefits

1. WordPress

Benefits: When I set up sites with WordPress, it is no surprise that it’s the most popular content management system (CMS) globally, known for its flexibility and extensibility. You can use thousands of themes and plugins to enhance functionality and design. WordPress is SEO-friendly, making it easier to rank on search engines.

Downsides: It requires regular maintenance and updates to keep it secure. The platform's number of options can make it complex for beginners without technical knowledge.

2. Wix

Benefits: Wix is a user-friendly platform with a drag-and-drop interface, making it ideal for beginners. It provides various templates and an intuitive design process. Its all-inclusive hosting and domain services simplify the process for non-technical users. -

Downsides: Limited customisation compared to open-source platforms like WordPress. Less control over SEO functionalities.

3. Squarespace

Benefits: Squarespace stands out for its beautifully designed templates and intense focus on visuals, making it a favourite for creatives and small businesses. It offers integrated e-commerce solutions and 24/7 customer support.

Downsides: Higher cost compared to other platforms and less flexibility regarding third-party integrations.

4. Webflow

Benefits: Webflow is an excellent CMS for creating and managing dynamic content sites. Create the content structures you need, add content (by hand, from a CSV, or via our API), and then design it visually with our world-class content management system (CMS)—and see amazingly vibrant websites that pop!

Downsides: Webflow's main limitation is that it is made for designers and developers. While it offers many basic templates, advanced customizations often require working with a Webflow Designer, which can be overwhelming for beginners.

5. Shopify

Benefits: Shopify is specifically designed for e-commerce, offering robust solutions for online stores, including inventory management, payment processing, and shipping integrations. It has a wide range of themes and apps to enhance store functionality.

Downsides: The cost can add up with various add-ons and transaction fees. Compared to other platforms like WordPress, there is limited customisation.

The Importance of Professional Web Design Services Selecting the right platform is the first step. Collaborating with a professional web design service can make a significant difference in executing your vision.

6. Domain and Hosting solutions - IONOS etc.

Benefits: A solution offering all-in-one support and service - somewhere to build within, host sites, and more.

Downsides: I started playing with IONOS, but they tend to be extreme salespeople. Their service levels are short, sharp, and hugely underwhelming.

Here’s why:

1. Expertise and Experience: Professionals bring years of experience and technical know-how. They can recommend the best platform based on your business’s needs and manage the setup, customisation, and maintenance complexities.

2. Customisation and Branding: A professional service ensures your website aligns with your brand identity, providing a unique, cohesive look that resonates with your target audience.

3. SEO and Performance Optimization: Expert designers focus on aesthetics and ensure your site is optimized for performance and SEO. This enhances user experience and improves your site’s visibility on search engines.

4. Time and Cost Efficiency: Outsourcing your web design lets you focus on your core business functions. It also prevents costly mistakes and ensures your website is built to the highest standards.

2. Social Media Integration: Consistently managing and integrating your social media channels with your website helps amplify your reach and engage with your audience on the platforms they frequent most.

3. Analytics and continuous improvement: Monitoring your website’s performance using tools like Google Analytics allows you to gain insights into user behaviour and improve your site’s effectiveness. Conducting an audit of your current website and digital strategy can identify areas for improvement and guide future enhancements.
